It's a New Age

The world's moved on

Once, the mighty pen could tear down kingdoms

but now it's broken, blunted,

and abandoned in a drawer 

You won't see the new invention hiding in front of your face 

though its more dangerous than a three-edged sword
and sharper than truth itself

Travelling

It's a dangerous business
travelling
the empty path
of dreams

sunlit as it is
you'll never see the
danger
until you're bundled

into mouldering blankets
and dragged
into
shadow

there's no telling
where you'll be swept off to-
mountaintop or
Khazad-dûm

you could fly
or fall

and never stop

On a more upbeat note, our family went to the opening of the Rivendell Archway in Kaitoke National Park over the weekend, it was great fun, and we are especially grateful to our "fairy godmother" Kristi Klein who made our gorgeous elf costumes from dresses she found at the SPCA op shop.

Poem inspired by the Lord of the Rings quote: “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,” he used to say. “You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to.” (Frodo Baggins about Bilbo, The Fellowship of the Ring,) Which I think was itself partly taken from "The Hobbit."


This is not the first Kaitoke, Lord of the Rings inspired poem. My original Kaitoke poem (published Quiet Places 2005) starts...

Wizard's Guide to Wellington

Alec finds a magical book, “The Wizard’s Guide to Wellingtowne,” lying in the corridor of Wellington Airport. But it doesn’t help answer his questions. Where is his father? Where is Perrin, the mysterious English cousin they were supposed to be meeting? And, most importantly, am I going mad, or is someone playing practical joke?

Perrin arrives at “Wellingtowne Airport” only to discover, Ike, her cantankerous wizarding guide had disappeared. She has been warned abut the dangerous city of “Wellingtowne,” but when she sets out to find her missing uncle, she has no idea just how dangerous it is going to get.

“Bad men watch you.”

Two cousins from different worlds must rescue Wellington from wizards who wish wake a very dangerous taniwha. (If you're not from New Zealand, a taniwha could be best described as a dragon, not so much a modern dragon, but an old fashioned wyrm, and this one is more than troubling because it is the size of a mountain...)
