Free short story "The Forgotten World"

"The Forgotten World"
I've been a little bit quiet lately in terms of poetry.  But if you love period action adventure with cryptozoological species, you may well love this little short story. Written in the time of Arthur Conan Doyle, there might be a little truth to the fact that the title is a riff on Athur's "The Lost World" :)

The Forgotten World

To find out what those creatures might be follow the link, and don't be caught on the cliffhanger! ...keep on scrolling to get the second half.

And of course if you haven't read my latest book Quest - please check out the free preview here.

Happy Reading!

A.J.

P.S. I'd love to know what you think of my stories. Reviews and feedback really make my day! :)

O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up -- for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Strangely enough, this is a quote I associate with Firefly above all else - even though (according to my impeccable source) it was never actually in the show. Unless you count references to "Captain Tightpants" Even so, it has become a meme for Firely fans possibly because Mal was the doomed captain of a successful ship.

And now, for those of us who have followed the Tuesday Poem, with the end of an era is almost upon us,the Tuesday Poem blog I would like to thank the two people who captained the ship, Mary McCallum, and more recently Helen Lowe. Both of whom are accomplished poets and writers well worth the read.

I would love to wish everybody a great week, stay strong, and maybe enjoy some more poetry at the Tuesday blog, or check out my Firefly poem Eulogy to battles lost.

Is it Tuesday Today?

Is it Tuesday today?

I need a little poem,
just a little poem -
any type of poem will do...

No, sorry I'm barren this week - next week - if I start early I'll be able to focus a little better -

It's been a big week, my husband completed 71 troops for the WWI diorama that will be on the display in the Dominion Museum over Anzac, sorry no pictures allowed!!! :) My daughter reached her second decade, so for Hobbit fans she is now officially a tweenie! (And as she was a Hobbit extra that's about right)...

Lost in the Museum SJV awards: A.J. Ponder
(editor), Eileen Mueller (sub-editor) and Geoff
Popham (artist) with Sir Julius Vogel looking on.

And in book related news, I was involved with a book that won two Sir Julius Vogel awards, okay so one was for cover-art, by the amazing Geoff Popham who is on the left holding his Sir Julius Vogel Award. (Actually it's a stand in award because Weta has been too busy with the WWI diorama - but he will get one just like it very soon!)  and the other was for the anthology itself, which I was heavily involved in. Helping with typesetting, design, coralling authors, and gluing all the stories in Lost in the Museum together with commentaries by Tui Merriweather. Believe it or not Tui was quite a tricky character to work with, we didn't even have her correct name until the last minute, and without Eileen Mueller (in the centre holding the book), and Lorraine Williams (almost as elusive as Tui Merriweather herself), she would never have come out of the shadows in quite the same way.

Lost in the Museum was written by Phoenix Authors Writing Group and invited authors including Lyn McConchie, Phillip Mann, Tim Jones and Glyn Maclean, and is available in many Libraries, and good New Zealand bookstores, (including Children's Bookshop & Rona Gallery), and of course Amazon.

Tuesday Poem: kinda totally lost

And I thought a wolf ate my homework would be original...
Rats, Faith McNulty got the idea first...

I have to admit this is not (exactly) a poem, the wolf ate my homework...I started a poem earlier this week called Lost, and it's ended up dragging me in about three different directions, which is about right for me. Never too sure which way to go - and all the roads look pretty good...at first. It's only later you realise you really should have chosen to walk across the field with the strawberries...

I guess that's what the garden path is all about.
I guess that's what being lost is all about
And so while there is no poem as such this week
there's this...whatever it is...

Which doesn't amount to the same thing, but at least it's going somewhere...
anywhere...
but here

Have a great week,
and hopefully I'll figure out where the poem Lost is going to take me. Maybe to two different places, maybe to a nice comfortable couch, a good book and a warm cup of cocoa, or maybe to the Tuesday Poem Blog.

Enjoy!

It's Tuesday - and I'm almost finished a huge project so here's a taste...

I know you are all dying to see the cover of the book I've been helping with the production for :) So I thought why not put up the pitcures, as the poetry for this evening. The cover art has been done by Geoff Popham - and it's amazing. I can't wait to see the book itself!

And underneath is a mock up (not quite the final) of the cover...

I apologise for the lack of (word) poetry, but it's amazing how much time it takes to put an anthology together, even if I'm not doing all the work. Certainly "Lost in the Museum" wouldn't be as fab as it's going to be without the help of Paul Stewart and Mary Mac. But mostly I'm pleased that it's almost ticked off my to do list.

Looking forward to more time on my own projects, it's going to be a busy year...

Have fun reading, maybe writing a little, and of course, enjoying the amazing poetry on theTuesday Poem Hub

There we are, my lovelies - make what sense of that you will - I'm really forward to making some time tonight - or even earlier to peruse the lovely Tuesday Poem poets  right here on the Tuesday Poem link site.

 And some bookkeeping - for those who aren't aware - it's NaPoWriMo, and
 Oh yes, and Wizard's Guide to Wellington is having a Giveaway on Goodreads - so why not see if you can get a copy for free?

Cheers,
and have a fantastic week :)

Sabbatical - there's a story running rampant through my brain

The Sign Off

There's a story running rampant through my brain
and I'd hate to tell it
once again
to fly off to the never
never land
where never stories lurk
because once it's lost -
so it always will remain.

Ike
Yup - I'm taking a break - you can partly blame this little guy - Ike.
He's been a rather distracting little Imp - always wanting to know what's happening around Wellington and wanting to be aired out!

Not only that but he's taken residence up at http://wizardsguide.wordpress.com

But mostly there's a story I've been meaning to write and I'm hoping to force it into the world care of NaNoWri Mo (National Novel writing Month)
Ugly yes - but aren't all newborns - except our own?

So thanks everybody for reading and I'll be back properly 1st of Jan - but might pop back and forth a little for the sheer heck of it, "on the spot" poems like this one and other important updates :)

cheers,

A.J. Ponder

Ecila

I would just like to take a moment to thank all the readers and writers for coming to the Rona Gallery readers and writers evening it was great to catch up with people I haven't seen for a while.  A special thanks for the people who took the stand, Mary for being such a delightful hostess and Fiona Kidman herself for her exquisite poetry and her grace.

Alright - Poem

Ecila

She fell
Between the cracks

Not one thing,
Nor another

Down the rabbit hole
Past Lala lane

Yes we've all been there
To visit

To take in the view
And refuse to

But this girl stayed
Past dinner time

More curious
Than annoyed

Less curious
Than lost

More and Less
Than you or I

She ignored the very late rabbit
With his watch habit

Not hearing much -
Except the Cheshire cat

Grinning back

Okay explanations.  This is very recent. 12 June. Ecila has a soft c.  That'll do.  Have a wonderful week everybody.
